C&C 43 "Caprice"

I started sailing on C&C 43 "Caprice" sail #5165
owned by:
- John Miller
in the Columbia Yacht Club.

We are preparing for the Chi-Mac race.

The skippers were wonderful people, but they also took the training seriously. I had to show up on the weekend, and we were also doing some beer can races on Wednesdays.

When not practicing for the race, they had a wonderful time on the boat, which was always full of friends.

Jerome E. Sullivan won the 2001 Chicago-Mackinac Trophy.
The race is the world's oldest annual freshwater distance race, covering 333 miles (536 km) from Chicago to Mackinac Island, Michigan. The race starts at the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse, goes across Lake Michigan, enters Lake Huron at the Straits of Mackinac, and ends in the Round Island Channel, off Mackinac Island.

Roy Disney's Pyewacket set the monohull record of 23 hours, 30 minutes, and 34 seconds in 2002, and Steve Fossett on Stars and Stripes set the multi-hull record of 18 hours, 50 minutes, and 32 seconds in 1998. Both records still stand today.

2002
A cold front rolled in and wreaked havoc on the race. Fifteen boats withdrew. The violent storm broke booms, tore down the mast of one boat, and capsized another. Roy Disney's boat, Pyewacket, broke the Mac Race time record held by Dick Jennings and the Pied Piper.
