Ecological Awarness

Sometimes I just cannot keep myself quiet when I see things so misleading...

Green acres: "a family that lives in the urban core [of a city] has about a 50% smaller carbon footprint than a similar-sized family in a distant suburb." More info and links to interactive maps: http://on.freep.com/KkoeBv

My smart-ass comment:

Let's all live in the city then! In fact let's lay ASPHALT and concrete all over the earth, that surely will KEEP BALANCE ON THIS PLANET. This is such a stupid statistic to make people in the city FEEL better.

I decided to write my own response:

The fact is I prefer a log cabin burning wood for heat hidden in acres of woods, organic fields and orchards -- if you think about it this only sustainable and RENEWABLE way to live. Cities destroy this Earth like cancer.

How do you know that you are doing things eco-correctly?

1)  build a house from rocks, adobe and logs that grow in your woods. Trees take 30 years to regrow, house lasts 100, or more, if you are smart the logs you harvest will not make a dent in the forrest
2) don't buy much of any fuels, wood from the forest, solar energy, wind and geothermal should be more that enough
3) If you don't have deer, wolves and bears visiting your property then you are FOOLING yourself into believing you are close to nature
4) one deer, or wild pig can provide a "grass fed, organic" meat for a year; Hunt, do not let animals suffer nasty life in cages so you can buy sub-standard meat from the store
5) do your job via telecommuting if you are in white-collar sector, it is possible, I have done it for years
6) try to grow at least some fruits and veggies you will eat. The grains (which you should not eat in the first place) are better farmed on massive scale
7) drink water from your own well, if tested, you will be healthier, there are minerals in it that missing in distilled (non-premium) bottled water
8) compost, do not dump the waste into pipes going outside of your property. Do not let pigs forage in places where human waste was recycled as this circulates the parasites.
9) use reusable glass, ceramic and steel containers, not plastic disposables - recycling is largely a myth
10) think what you NEED for happy life, not what you want. You can be HAPPY in smaller house, with less stuff. Spend more time on HOBBIES with friends over wine, or beer YOU made, instead impulsive shopping for things you do not need just to make yourself feel better.
11) Have less children: 2 people should try not to raise more than 2 for the sake of the future generations, the math is simple, overpopulation is a major problem we are facing as far as area available, food supply, water supply, energy needs, etc. (see WIKI image below)

12) If you have to drive to work 50 miles each way you should consider changing job, or where you live, but don't get fooled that by living in the city you are saving ANYTHING, you are killing this planet.

I know MOST OF US are not able to achieve the above, but if you are serious about our legacy you should start preparing and heading that direction.

Hand-loading 16 gauge shotgun

The 16 gauge is a traditional upland game shotgun (for birds and rabbits). It is an excellent mix of power and light weight, especially in single-shot, break action configuration for the mountain hiking, my Springfield 1928 model comes apart into less than 20 inch pieces in 5 seconds.

The shells are however hard to come by, even in lead loads (usually shot #6) they are rare. In most of south-central California we have "lead-free Condor zone" so every time you hunt and leave animal internals behind, even when buried, you would be leaving potentially dangerous lead behind. In any case I find it 1) necessary 2) cheap 3) fun to reload my own shells.

*** Reload at your own risk! ***

To reload a shotgun shells the only new "tools" you need are:
  • long nail
  • wooden dowel in diameter smaller than the shell
In addition I use:
  • rubber mallet and hard flat surface (white cutting board)
  • small scissors and paper cards
  • IMR HI_SCOR 880-X smokeless powder
  • Winchester W209 shotgun primers
  • Claybuster WWA16 replacement wad CB0100-16 (optimum load 1 oz. lead shot) 500 pack
  • Steel 1/4 shot (kind you buy for slingshot) - I have to get per pound to save money

  • I've cut a small piece of wood dowel to serve me as a guide to primer pocket, then I nailed thru it as shown in the picture.

  • Note that the wood dowel is slightly tapered to allow for the thickness of plastic wads.
  • I use plastic LEE 2.2cc scoop which measures about 20.1 grains of "IMR HI-SKOR 800-X" powder. See UPDATE below.
  • I cut the top of the crimp
  • I put 20 "steel ball shot 1/4 inch size", they fit in neat layers of 4, each is about 1 gram in weight which give me about 310 grains total
  • lead equivalent - one (1) ounce is 437.5 grains, about 28 balls, but they would not fit in there with plastic wads I use, I will try to find traditional flat wads (packed felt)
  • I cut and use simple paper card disks in size a little bigger so they form an crimp when pushed in
  • I use small amount of wax to seal it, then wait to cool down, then add more wax to reinforce it

  • UPDATE:
I've shut the 2.2cc (cubic centimeter) scoop loads, which were sweet and gentle* and shooting well at 40 feet (9 holes on the top of the paper). The spread of the shot is due to my shorter barrel and no choke, which is fine with me and still makes it an effective rabbit/upland bird gun.

This load, however, is significantly LESS kicking than the factory 1 ounce (437.5 grains) solid lead slug -- which tells me that I could go to the next scoop size about 24 grains of 800-X.

    * gentle - definition derived after shooting: solid shotgun slugs, 7.62x54R and .45 ACP P+ rounds

    Maya 3D: log cabin: staircase

I am pretty happy with how the log staircase came out.
My goal is to make the cabin to be as natural as possible so the logs on the underside will be naturally round and only flatten where needed.

    Maya 3D: log cabin

    Maya 3D: log cabin project:

Last night I pretty much put all the exterior logs in place. It is a time consuming task because you adjust each log by its end tip, the logs are not parallel to the ground and they are tapered in shape. The log also have to overlap at the corners correctly, which requires much work as well. I did not adjust the length of the logs and their overhand as I will do it as final touch.

Today, I will start on details, maybe on stone-work of the floors.

Gnomon Maya 3D class - log cabin - wireframe

I created basic plan (layout) of my cabin. I made sure that I planned all features I wanted in the cabin and their layout, for example:

    - living room facing south
    - bedroom on the open 2nd floor, facing east so I can wake up with sunrise
    - the roof overhangs to protect of the noon summer sun, but allowing winter low angle sun
    - large garage deep under the house
    - front balcony lowered so not to block the view from the living room

In the next step I will replace walls with logs that I started to prepare:

    Anthropologist or Survivalist?

I had interesting conversation with my sister Maja today. After telling her I want to learn how the knotted (Persian) carpets are made (our father used to make wool carpets) she said I am really an anthropologist. I was thinking I was more of survivalist..

    My definitions:

anthropologist = smoking weed with natives
survivalist = making your own spear
anthropologist = making an atlatl (spear thrower)
    survivalist = collecting right weeds

go figure, there is an overlap!

I started Gnomon School of Visual Effects

Today, I started my first class in Gnomon School of Visual Effects. I will be learning how to create 3D effects in Maya, a skill set I can hopefully use at my work in mobile development.

I was very impressed with the final projects of last semester students, there was a Hobbit house and Star Trek Enterprise command room among many other high quality projects. I was amazed what we will learn in one semester.

My final project will be to create interior of log cabin, I call this project "Log Cabin I would build myself"I will post my progress here.

Take time to browse their website, they are really the best FX school out there:
