Sunday sailing class

In the morning I had the third of my sailing classes.

There was one more left on August 4, 2007.

The winds were very calm, but because it was a weather system coming from the North, the waves were bigger. The waves on Lake Michigan in the Chicago area are the biggest when the wind blows them all the way the length of the lake.

We practiced some tacks and gybes and the man overboard figure 8 drills.

Then, we spent much time in the port practicing the peer approaches, which was scary because it always looked like you were going to hit it.

We practiced the 90-degree approach with the swing and slid your butt (stern) to the dock. It is not unlike the car parking in a thriller movie.
Sliding the big boat to the dock slip is not easy either.

I came home so exhausted that I dropped and slept a few hours. My legs were hurting from last night's sail and today's waves.

My favorite quotations..

“A man should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”  by Robert A. Heinlein
