Development Methodology and Project Management

This management methodology is a collection of the best practices I gathered over last 15 years of work. During that time, I have seen a many success stories and great failures wasting tens of millions of dollars. I have put together these notes because even today, after the mountain of books have been published on the subject, I can still see managers doing things in the way that has been described as disastrous more than a decade ago.

I hope that I can convey some of my observations to the coworkers and clients I will have a privilege to work with, I also hope that this will help me to establish some best practices to follow and improve upon.

My coverage may not be all encompassing, but it is definitely a rich experience.

  • I have studied the culture and the mindset of the Japanese "Continuous Improvement", or kaizen (改善) while living and studying in Japan.
  • I have experienced the management style of USMC considered one of the most successfully managed organizations in America,
  • In USMC I studied the Total Quality Management (TQM) also heavily based on Japanese corporate management
  • I have seen 6 Sigma accounting like "MBA" approaches
  • I have seen misdirected "throw lots of the money at it" - consulting outsourcing approach
  • I have seen the nightmares of outsourcing to cheap labor in India, Philippines and Poland
  • I have lived the "lack up the geeks in the server-room for few months and let's see what comes out" approach
  • I worked the 14-hour days, occasionally overnight -- work until you quit approach
  • I have done the pair-programming, Agile Methods and Extreme programming
  • I have worked for companies with Rational Unified Process RUP
  • and most of all I have seen a lot of "everyone on the project do your own thing and hope for good outcome" approach

Caribou Caffee - ultimate urban escape

Today, I was meeting a Japanese exchange coworker in the Japanese restaurant I have never been in before, so I arrived early. I considered having a tea and waiting while my friend arrived. I found the restaurnt, but it was still closed, so I went to the Caribou Caffee next door.

I am a frequent visitor of Borders and Starbucks and yes, I have been in Caribou before, but todays was different. Maybe it was a rain outside, or a really nice bartista man that set me in the mood. I got my small mocha with the chocolate-covered beans on top, I found a nice seat by the fire place on the comfy couch, the soft music played and the wood cabin decor got me hooked. All suddenly, I was in my dream house, what they called "The Third Place" - somewhere between home and work - that comfy place where you want to spend your free time.

wabi-sabi

I've read the aphorisms:
"Strive for excellence, not perfection." and "Don't worry about perfection, you'll never reach it."
Sadly, people tend to consider the things and ideas that are grand and complex as amazing. Any fool can see the world as complex and make it even more so.
"If not the perfection, not complexity, what is the excellence?" - You'd ask. - "Ha! Glad you asked this question. Your journey begins here and now."

ch001 - Friday morning

It was to be a wasteful day. The client decided to have a two hour, Friday afternoon meeting in the Chicago downown headquarters. With his team of developers left in Milwaukee office, Dominique knew that very little will get accomplished today. The project was already in the red, the practice eating up the costs of the software development after the project manager and the senior developer left without the knowledge transfer.

Dominique got up late, very late. Somehow he managed to shower, shave and be in the car 8 minutes before the Metra train to downtown left at 7:13. The silver Audi Quattro complained in -2C temperature without the proper warm-up of the turbo, which needs a warm, thin, synthetic oil to spin happily, but still it managed delivered him to the station in a record time, with 15 seconds to spare.

He always looked forward to an hour of the train ride when he could read. Books, popular science and financial magazines were his passion which is somewhat of a rariry in the computer community raised on PS2 and Nintendo. He could not walk out of the bookstore without a book or a magazine. Today, Dominique was finishing the new Michael Crichton's bestselller "Next" he has picked up in the Wallgreens just a couple days before, while waiting for the prescription. Dominique loved Crichton's writing style and the subject. He nearly finished this 500-plus-page thriller in only couple of evenings. Genetics, morality and the law. Without any formal education the field of genetics was too difficult for any in-depth understanding, yet he has read most of the popular books on the subject that were published. His 5 years of biology classes and anthropology college education made him ideal target reader for this kind of books.

The train ride ended all too soon, but his butt and all bones hurt from the benches that were probably designed by a sadist in the medieval ages. What a difference, he thought, from the ultra-comfortable, airplane like, trains he rode in Germany.

Chicago in winter is awful, just miserable. The seven-block walk from the Union Station to the red brick clock tower of the Encyclopedia Brittanica building felt like an arctic wind tunnel test -- he could barely pass. The the dress shoes and thin dress pants did not help the situation, he did not like to wear the warm undies. Actually, he did not like to wear much at all, office life was a punishment for him. His athletic body made him look good all dressed up, especially in a good european suit, but he would rather wear his Brazilian Havaiana flip-flops and loose shorts on the subtropical beach. Year-after-year he has promised himself to move out to San Francisco, Tampa, Denver, Seattle, Portland, anywhere really, where there was climate that made any sense, the ocean, or mountains, but then again, the his current position was too good to quit.

He got to the office before 9 am, the office was already packed and most of the cubicles were taken. Dominique, a principal, did not have a desk in Chicago, even his boss, the vice president and the global practice leader did not have an office, the company did not care about such things. Dominique thought the Chicago headquarters is a nightmare to work at, he preffered an hour and an half drive to the Milwaukee where he and three other developers could work in his spacious, quiet and cozy office as a team. The were no teams in Chicago, the environment did not allow for that. People came in, took any open cubes and spent days slouching over their computers, occasionally they got up and talked to coworkers.

His company hired a lot of very attractive young women, probably to offset the look of geeky software engineers. I was important to make an impression on the big-fish client CEOs and VPs visiting the headquarters.

Today, it was about the cute, sexy, black dress. It went for most of the morning, and for Dominique it was quite enjoyable. One of the ladies was unsure if it was appropriate to wear the dress she bought to the tonight's company's party. She showed the Web pictures of the dress to what seemed like all of the girls in the office -- there were about four of them at the time, right in front of Dominique's cube, giggling and analyzing it's length. The curiosity took over, Dominique got up went around to take a look at the picture. More giggling. The dress was fabulous and the owner a good looking girl, Dominique approved. At 34 he was acutely aware that twenties pass all too quickly to waste even a minute on false modesty.

The emails, most of them meaningless, usually took couple of hours a day to read and answer, they provided little value to the company, or the client. He had a love-hate relationship with emails. They could be essential, but he also knew that things get solved much more efficiently by person-to-person conversation. Except when you cannot understand a word of what other person is saying, which in today's global economy happened often, then, the emails saved the day. Most people could read and write in English. After the chore of going thru million of emails, he did some programming, he knew he has got on the morning, the afternoon would be all meetings.

Since he was alone he could quickly write a lot code. He really enjoyed programming. In fact he was somewhat a fanatic when it came to writing. He liked the code to be clean, easy to read and to follow. To him, it was a beautiful combination of writing and logic. Well, sometimes at least. He truly believed in beauty of the well-written software, which he equated to writing of poetry, which he also did.

However, Dominique knew that it is a very bad practice to write code alone. He just has lost a senior developer who has worked for a whole year on the  essential part of the project without sharing any of the knowledge. At the rate they charged, that lost year equated to a nice, big house, mortgage-free. However, what the developer left to Dominique, was a whole bunch of complicated code that did not work. Also, because the developer worked alone, the architectural solutions he used were of the dubious quality.

There is something almost magical when you talked to another person and tried to explain what you are doing, Dominique believed. All suddenly the ideas were more clear, code cleaner, and the architecture better. It was also faster. Unfortunately for Dominique that was not the climate in his company. His bosses still operated in 1980s mode - lock up a geek in a room for a year with a minimum requirements and hope that what he creates will work. Things don't work well this way. Now, Dominique's team had to make up for the loss.

As he got up the get another glass of water, Dominique has run into on of the VPs, Chibu-san. Chibu, a Japanese, came from the parent company, his job is to make deals with the Japanese companies operating in USA. He has lived in Chicago for a while now and seemed to enjoy the freedom away of the rigid structure of corporate NTT. Dominique like Japanese and their culture and he liked Chibu-san.

"Hi, Chibu-san, how are you, long time..", said Dominique.
"Oh, Dominique, hello, where are you working now?" Chibu-san politely smiled and stopped to talk.
"Same client, WIO Industries, mostly in Milwaukee office, or their North Brook location.", Dominique said, " Listen, what are you doing for lunch?"
"I got a conference call at noon until 12:30.. it this OK?", Chibu straggled with words, but looked sincere.
"Of course, I sit over there..", pointed Dominique, ".. just come a grab me."
Few minutes later Chibu-san came back, and said apologetically: "Is it OK, to bring another Japanese?"
"Of course", smiled Uki, hoping that it will be for the better.

Dominique could hardly wait, his normal lunch time was at 11:30, so by 12:25 he was starved, already dressed and pacing around the hallway.

During a visit to the mental asylum, a visitor asked the Director how do
you determine whether or not a patient should be institutionalized.

"Well," said the Director, "we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a
teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to empty
the bathtub."

"Oh, I understand," said the visitor. "A normal person would use the
bucket because it's bigger than the spoon or the teacup."

"No." said the Director, "A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want
a bed near the window?"

ARE YOU GOING TO PASS THIS ON, OR DO YOU WANT THE BED NEXT TO MINE ?

I dream about life away from the rut we live in.

I want to get away and rent a cheap apartment in an old house under a red-tiled roof.
At sunrise, I want to ride a motor-bike (or an old jeep) to the deserted beach, walk for miles, dive, run, be naked, make love, feel the life, then, on the big rock eat a baguette with tomatoes, salt and pepper, and cheese, drink watered-down wine.
Spend the afternoons in a small corner cafe, reading and writing books.
Spend evenings in front of the fireplace with a cup of traditional European hot chocolate.

movie about love

Today, I have watched a movie. A beautiful, european, movie. The movie was about love and the struggle with real life issues, it was also incredibly romantic and sensual, just how the real life is.

We all watch these movies. The romantic books seem to be ever-more popular with the women. Yet, we live in the world devoid of human feelings, in the all-too-proper, politically-correct, ice cubes chilled for the comfort of the fat, tie-sporting, sleazy salesman and the human resource vice presidents that long time ago forgot what it means to be a human. Or, worse, hypocritically screwing behind the closed doors with only the wrinkles of the dresses and untidy hairdo to tell the story. The real life is not the corporate, suburban, superficial notion of life we live here, in Prudeland.

Let's face it; life is about the feelings of love and love is about people together, making love. Everything else is just food and shelter, and keeping yourself busy when you have no love.

The movie has stirred me inside, reminded me of who I am, and about my past, my memories and my love.

joke: via email

A guy calls a company and orders their 5-day, 10 lb. weight loss program.   The next day, there's a knock on the door and there stands before him a voluptuous, athletic, 19 year old babe dressed in nothing but a pair of Nike  running shoes and a sign around her neck. She introduces herself as a representative of the weight loss company. The sign reads,  "If you can catch me, you can have me." Without a second thought, he takes off after her. A few miles later huffing and puffing, he finally gives up. The same girl shows up for the next four days and the same thing happens.
On the fifth day, he weighs himself and is delighted to find he has lost 10 lbs. as promised.

He calls the company and orders their 5-day/20 pound program. The next day there's a knock at the door and the re stands the most stunning, beautiful, sexy woman he has ever seen in his life. She is wearing nothing but Reebok running shoes and a sign around her neck that reads, "If you catch me you can have me". Well, he's out the door after her like a shot. This girl is in excellent shape and he does his best, but no such luck. So for the next four days, the same routine happens with him gradually getting in better and better shape. Much to his delight on the fifth day when he weighs himself, he discovers that he has lost another 20 lbs. as promised.

He decides to go for broke and calls the company to order the 7-day/50 pound  program, "Are you sure?" asks the representative on the phone.  "This is our most rigorous program." "Absolutely,"  he replies, "I haven't felt this good in years." The next day there's a knock a t the door; and when he opens it he finds a huge muscular guy standing there wearing nothing but pink running shoes and a sign around his neck that reads, "If I catch you, your ass is mine." He lost 63 pounds that week.

Islamica

Today, I have been reading the Magazine "Islamica" to learn the the
enlightened voices of muslims that otherwise may be muffled by the
images of war in the blood-thirsty mass media.

The magazine started with the article stating pretty much the same as
the latter part of the previous sentence, plus the fact that there are
very few muslim who are able, or willing, to communicate to the
western world the more beautiful aspects of their culture. I though,
the page was objective, even if somewhat academic and pointless.

The following were the news snippets that I thought were right on,
good starting.

Next came the article about corruption involving muslim in Trinidad
and Tobago, It was interesting, I thought, even if the sources
opposing the corruption were unnamed "prominent muslims" which I grew
to expect - this idea goes back to the first article.

The funny picture caricature of VP Dick Chaney (I presume) defying the
global warming, that was an interesting choice since most of the
muslim world is oblivious to the ecological issues in North Africa,
Arab peninsula, Indonesia, or elsewhere. In fact the symbol of
progress in arab world - Dubai - is a totally ecological-defying
creation. I hope that was precisely the point, by laughing at others
we can understand that we are wrong ourselves.

Then came a couple of articles which are pure anti-USA propaganda. My
stomach cramped, I have seen so much of that in my life in my 18 years
I have lived in the socialist Poland influenced by Russian communism.
Even until very recently, I had some Polish relatives calling America
rotten names, straight of the communist repertoire. Propaganda that
brings hatred and not a thinnest thread of possibility for the
reconciliation, or cooperation.

I am really sorry and disappointed, dear "Islamica", I will try to
finish the magazine and find valuable and good points about your
culture, but I am not sure if you are doing yourselves a favor by
adding the oil to the fire.

work environment

In my whole career as a computer programmer I have never worked in
the company that cared less for the work environment of their
developers, or had a client who cared less, then the place I have
been working at for over a year. For anybody who knows what are the
consulting rates today (not low, I assure you) you'd expect that they
give you a good place to sit and actually do your work, or that they
actually get interested in what you are doing, no such luck.

Cogito, ergo sum - Decartes

"We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With
our thoughts, we make our world."
- Sakyamuni Buddha, Dhammapada 2,600 years ago
People back then may not have Sony TVs, or Apple computers, but they
knew the same facts that about psychology that every self-help book
on the shelves of the Borders will tell you.
Decide to live the free and happy life and your stress will be
greatly reduced. Make your mind to success, set goals, follow them,
and you will succeed. Smile at life and to people and they will start
smiling back to you.
Definitely worth trying.

One man's trash is another's treasure

Today, I went to the Goodwill. Most of the people drop off their unneeded stuff, so do I, but I realized that that place is a goldmine and I've gotten whole bunch of quality wooden furniture. The cherry TV cabinet, the tall wood and glass display cabinet and 4 tall nicely carved chairs. All of that for total of $120. It really looks great in my 1942 brick home and fits into the wood decore. I also feel good about recycling of the wooden goods.

AIKO

AIKO  - "The Child of Artificial Intelligence" (in Japanese "ko" means child; "ai" means love denoting the "emotional intelligence" aspect of the project)

Both, the most advanced science, the quantum physics, as well as the millennia of spiritual training in Zen have brought the humanity to some interesting conclusions. Everything is of the same nature - the flux of energy, everything is relative, furthermore it can exist in multiple states at the same time.

If the wisest of us recognize these principles, why then the computer science, that practically runs our modern world, is so fixated on the narrow-minded idea of "true" or "false" and nothing between?

Most of the computing nova-days is created based on hard rules and predefined knowledge-base which is the cause of its many shortcomings. It is not flexible, not adaptable, and specialized in the very narrow area of expertise.

If we compared it to the living world it would be like a chicken raised by a certain fast-food chains. Too heavy to be effectively supported by the body, unable to feed itself in the nature, surviving only in the machine-fed, confined, cage. As much as I hate the malicious hackers myself (let them burn in hell forever for all that spam and havoc they create), I must say that even today's computer viruses are pathetic, they take the advantage of a very particular security hole and as soon as the breach is closed they are useless. This "brilliance" of today's programs pales in comparison with the simplest living bacteria which when placed in a new environment starts to adapt and within almost hours its future generations embrace the change. Evolution.

In the AIKO project I will attempt to combine the evolutionary approach to the software growth, affective computing, emotional intelligence, pattern recognition, simple language recognition.
AIKO may have infinite applications; for example is can be used as a personal assistant, a tutor, a smart filing manager with the industry-specific applications for particular file types.

Art of doing things

Strive to learn everything you can about your thing in life, learn the mechanics of it, every aspect, until it become a second nature, natural and without thinking. Then you'll forget all you have learned and develop a Zen-like gut feeling, an intuition, about the subject. Only then you will be able to make an art of it.

Today, I failed to heel my own advice: "Do your very best at this moment and let go of the attachments and delusions."

Zen & The Art of the Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig

For the last 12 years, I have repeatedly re-read that fascinating book.

I meditated the Zen for even longer period of time.

Only today, I realized that the question which I asked myself for thousand times "What is Quality?" is a Koan, a question that has only one purpse - to transend the the intellect, intuition into the enlightenment, or madness.

This profound realization left me in awe and humbled by my blindness over the past 12 years.

A Cook and Master Ikkyu

One day a man came to the famous Japanese Zen master Ikkyu. The man said:
- "Master, I work hard as a cook, yet the inn-keeper treats me like a worthless dog. Master, please help me with the inn-keeper, you are a very respected man in the town."
Ikkyu, without a word moved on to make a tea. After the tea Ikkyu send the man away with these words:
- "Go and become a good cook"
The men went away a little offended and disappointed, but out of the respect to the great master, he did study the art of cooking. After the while he came back to the master and said:
- "Master, I work hard and I became one of the better cooks in town, the inn-keeper is better now, but she still yells at me and pushes me around. Master, being a great cook is not working... please help this time."

Master Ikkyu tasted the sweets that the man brought and indeed they were first class. The cook thought - "Now the master will send the word to the inn-keeper for me"
Ikkyu upon finishing the sweets said "Observe and learn the art of being the inn-keeper, understand how your master thinks."
This was the strangest request, thought the cook, but he went away as it was not a custom to argue with the master.

A while later the cook comes back to Ikkyu and says:
"Master, I work hard, I became the best cook and I learned the art of inn-keeping, I realized I could go and work for anybody I would like to, yet I decided to stay in my inn because the keeper became quite agreeable."

"Was it she, or you that changed?" asked master.
"Ah, Master, indeed it was I" the cook replied.

"Now you know the true path: 1) work hard, 2) study your art, become good at what you do, 3) be mindful of others around you and 4) be mindful of your own thoughts."

Auschwitz "Au Revoir Les Enfants" (Goodbye Children)

I watched the movie "Au Revoir Les Enfants" (Goodbye Children) set in the Catholic School in France during the German occupation.
The school was for the boys from the rich families to keep them away from the dangerous cities. The priest, the principal of the school, together with the staff took in a couple of Jewish boys. The story unfolds until the boys get arrested by the Gestapo and are carried away, we learn that they get killed, one of them eventually dies in Auschwitz.

Auschwitz was one of the biggest concentration camps set by the Nazi, during the war about 1.1 million people were killed in there, 90% of that were Jewish.

Why do I write this? - because it strikes a personal note.

Auschwitz (Oświęcim) is 88 km from my hometown, the distance you can drive in 1.5 hour.

I visited the place when I was a child and I still bear a deep scar, some 20 years later.

People please don't hate each other: black and white, Jewish and Arabs, Catholics and Protestants, Shi'a and Sunni - we are no different from each other and with a little soul-searching and mindfulness we can find the peace for each other.

I shall write about the experiences of my family during the war...

Forrest Preserve 17:20

My grand-grandpa Lukasik had places in his forest in Kasina, Poland, from which he always would bring a hat of mushrooms, the places that nobody knew. He also had a horse that would not be used for farming,
but for riding the surrounding mountain forests. He was a soldier in Austrian army, he had servant-workers that helped with the farm and his wife was respectable and educated, delivering babies for the whole village as many of them remember even today.

So this is all I know, I never met him, but I lived in the walls of his house and I feel the connection.

Today, I go in my spirit to him, I sit in the high steppe among the forest, not a soul around. I soak the sun low over the tree line, peaceful. I feel the warm wind mixing with the chill of the forest. I feel the connection to this surroundings, the white tail deer feeding nearby among the grasses, I feel connection to my ancestry in Kasina
I am at peace about my future.

The hum of the humanity, the cars on the road, is so distant it sounds like a quiet ocean surf, it is quieter than the cicadas and the grasshoppers.

The mosquito spray and the blanket are important to carry in one's car trunk. Nobody like the mosquitos, even when sprayed they still buzz around. Sometimes when the surroundings are as beautiful as
today, you have to learn to ignore them. They are like a lover with a cold, the can get you sick, but here they are. Be mindful it is their home your are in.

Thoughts on Buddhism

I was thinking about Buddhism, I have read many books, and not all Buddhism is the same.

I realize I am not Zen Buddhist, not even a "proper" Buddhist, but a follower of my own way, er..., "Uki-do" (wink-wink).

Recently, my friend sarcastically laughed at me for hearing me say "I like normality" as if I was everything but. That was the first time I realized that I may be perceived by others as some kind of rebel without a cause, to me, in my own life, I stand up against what seems as unnatural to me.

So how do you practice my "Uki-do"?

At every moment try to be mindful (vipassana), be mindful of your own states of mind, and of others, try to see what causes the pain and anger. Don't let these states of mind control the life.

The most important principle is to try to do the best you can in every moment of your life. Then, don't worry when things go wrong, you already did your best and there is nothing you could have done better. Also, things do improve slowly in your life as you make the effort (karma). Remember, your "best" is subjective and others may think contrary, again, just try your best, trust your instincts, do not succumb to the peer pressure.

Stop to smell the roses, write a poem, observe. "Don't just do anything, sit there", goes an old buddhist saying.

Your life is your meditation, sitting in the cave may work for some, but not for me.

Train to live with the assumption that you may die the next day (momento mori), and your life will become full of meaning and maybe of peace (nirvana). Only young fools think they will live forever and waste their lives.

Battles are won before they even begin. Only young fools think otherwise.
Therefore be a warrior - imagine an old, wise, gentleman/warrior/master. Old warriors avoid the fights at all costs. The fights bring the casualties, but hardly ever the solutions. Gym

I've hit the gym today, first time in a while. I gave a good try to most of the machines, felt good.
Suddenly, within hours, I got sick: watery, light-sensitive eyes and running nuse. Maybe got a virus in the gym, maybe allergy I am not aware I have any. The sore muscles after the exercise compound the feeling. I ate a good dinner and 1000 mg of vitamin C chase by a bottle of water and going to sleep, hopefully will pass before tomorrow.

No, I did not forget to write.

The stress and worries suck out the life blood of me like mosquitoes, leaving only an etch and the desire to throw my hands in the air a run like a madman. I am at the wit's ends.

I watched tonight the movie "Girl with a Perl Earring" it is a masterpiece about the masterpiece. Life can be so beautifull, yet so sad.

Ghosts in my closet.

Worked late tonight. The house is silent, scary. I have seen a horror a couple a days ago, a lady in white night gaun laying in the pool of blood. I have the image in front of my eyes everytime I look at my closet. Silly?, maybe, but serious enough to give me nightmares, afraid to fall asleep. I might need a psychiatrist soon.

loneliness

Loneliness is like a rust,
but love; which may not last,

which brands us scorching so
is lonesome feelings' foe.

This marriage of love and lone,
the feeling which come and gone,

Here now! The love is on!
Gloom then, tomorrow's gone.

The tears, heart-aches -- I care not heed,
True love is all I need.

Great Smoky Mountains, NC

It feels good to be in mountains again. After non-stop, near 100F of Florida and Georgia, the low 80s feel good. The steep, green slopes make me simply happy to look at, they remind me of the shapes of Gorce Mounatins, Poland, where I grew up. The mounatins really conrast with the boredom of the plains that I so despise -- I do love ocean, but not the flatlands. I think Oregon, or British Columbia would be a place for me, ocean and the mountains, that is of course if I cannot live in Pyrenees, near the Mediterean Sea. I better start working on my Spanish/Catalonian/French!
Tonight, it is too late to look around, early start tomorrow. I having a dinner in the nice family Italian restaurant, per recommendation, ah chicken florentina!!!

Liliann is my faithful companion, today we drove for some 7 hours, she did not sleep a minute, not a single complaint.

Savannah, GA

There are few places in US that speak "romantic" only by mentioning their name, Savannah, Georgia is definitely one of them. Basking in the sun, so much gentler that that of harsh Florida, makes the place trully green, everything is verdant and alive here. The city's old architecture, cabble-stone streets, waterfront parks with tall trees and moss hanging from every branch make for the feel of mystry and romance.

Smiling faces, beutiful places.

Daytona Beach, Florida

This is the second time in my life I am in Daytona Beach. The first one in Marine Corps with some military friends, Agnieszka and Ania. It was a great spring break.
This time with Lili, we drove thru the town and stopped north of the town to swim before the sunset. The water is great and the surf a great fun. The sun and the beach is a delight. There is over 50 miles of a perfect beach to Jacksonville, beach-bum paradise. Could be romantic if not so alone. The sunset is lovely. I would like to see the sunrise tomorrow somewhere on the beach in Georgia.

Florida

We finally madee it to Florida after 3 days of driving. It takes about 20 hours, but we drove the speed limit, found the hotels right after the dark, and slept in long. The travel wil Liliann is not difficult at all, actually would not make any difference if I went by myself. She does not complain, we stop for restroom breaks when I need to and for food when I am starving, her needs are the same.
The Hampton Inn hotels do not support the Mac computers, so last night I changed the rooms to Marriot, since the Hampton had only smoking room and Internet did not work. I was promissed not to be chargged, I left the good tip behind.

Drive to Florida

This is a second day of driving, somewhere outside Atlanta, GA. The weather is nice, 104F, since my skin is burned, it is painful in the sun. The scenery of Appalatian hills is breathtaking. Driving within the speed limit, no rush, no schedule to meet. Listening to the book Robinson Crusoe is a good entertainment. Lili is really good, no need to stop more than for myself, but it is hard with a baby girl.

Epiphany - living the dream

Epiphany is one of these interesting words that can mean so much. For me it means the crossroad where I chose the road less travelled. The road less travelled is less smooth, harder to travel, so you cannot carry all your baggage with you. But it is a road the it more interesting, pictoresque and romantic. Sometime this road feels lonely, but then you meet a friend along that lonely path.

Today I heard a saying: a power boater laughing at the slow sailboat about not getting anywhere fast, the captain answered, "But dear, I am already there!" I am living a dream, and I choose my path daily to live that dream, I will not have any other way.

Chasing the Horizon

Wow, what a blast, a little mind blowing book! I just finished reading "Chasing the Horizon" by Cap'n Fatty Goodlander. The book is amussing, witty, very witty, and has touches home on several levels.

You don't need money to live your dream life, to own a boat, to cruise the seas.

You can be a pro writer and the jouralist, even if you did not attend the high school. You have to be willing to practice a lot and to be hundred-fold rejected and ridiculed.

You can have a family aboard. You can find the fullfilment in life beyond the collecting the things like houses, cars, and plasma TVs in the rat race of the corporate humpster wheel.

Don't be fooled by the corse language used, it is "for the effect", the book is a valuable literature.

Together with "The Zen and the art of motorcycle maintanance", this book is definitelly going on my "short" bookshelf of this man's essentials.

Classic.

Fulfillment at work

Today, I had one of the best days at work of my life.

With 6 students divided in 3 teams, working on the new and clean project, I could circulate around in relaxed atmosphere and help solve the problems. I felt needed and fulfilled, which is always a good thing. It is such a big difference from daily banging your head alone against some old and totally screwed up project.

I am actually looking forward to each day of being a mentor. Maybe I should try to make it my career?

wild horses in the coal mine

Today, at work, was a second day of the training of the 6 newly hired college graduates. The tranning is going very well, even to my own suprise -- I am able to talk, keep them occupied and productive for the whole 8 hours. My thoat hurt, but I feel that we accomplished a lot.

I decided to forgo the typical Power-Point presentation deal and focus on the development of a real, hands-on application which I created for that purpose. Boy, is there a difference from that dry stuff others were presenting!

I had a boss once a while ago who was stressing the need to prepare the good presentation and printed documentation. When I finally heard him lecture, I knew why, ouch!

It is worth mentioning that despite the fact that they are all computer major with Java as a language, they have no skills whatsoever required in our proffesion. Shame on the universities and teachers who still teach ASP/VB, ridicuolous!

I got a call from the Gen. H. about 7PM, clear message: cut cost on the free lunches for trainees, make them work at night, add an individual projects to what they need to accomplish, despite the fact that they did not know a squat before and are being bombarded by too much knowledge too fast already.

The instructiions I got are more than a slightly bit against my salty marine principles of family-like-team, shoot-to-kill and get-out-and-play, but I need to keep my bearing for the course.

I got an image in my mind, the wild horses, in the coal mine. Did I just hear a whip sound? Next week on Wednesday they will take us to the dinner after work (like that will make anybody feel better), so we can get to know each other better, I cannot wait, but then, Wednesday is my sailing night, too bad I will miss the team-building.

Saturday sail on Diamond Lake

Roman and I took the Day Sailer out. We practiced several things.

The jib-only sailing stinks upwind, after trying several times, we got so close to the lee shore that we had to use my electric motor to prevent being pushed on people's peers.

Motoring upwind was also difficult as the wind was brisk circa 15 knots and I have only 55 pounds of thrust motor.

Heaving to: worked very well, we got on the (1) starboard tack,  (2) tightened the jib with the starboard sheet until it backfilled, (3) locked rudder to the lee and (4) loosen the main a little. While heaving to you can relax as your hands are free and the boat sails itself on the beam reach at a slow knot or two, depending if the main is helping or not. I tie the main just enough not to luff.

I installed a quick jib douse line: tied up the the top of the jib, a thin line goes thru some hanks to the tack and from there to the cockpit. Once I release the jib halyard, and pull on this line and the jib gets pulled to the deck without need of going to the bow. Great safety feature.

I tested the ballast of two 50+ pound bags of sand paced in the midship. I think they added the some stability to the boat in addition to 65 pound battery I am carrying aft. I will need all stability I can get when sailing with my wife and daughter.

We sailed whole day, making a point of docking with the wind in our nose, it took us quite a while to beat upwind, with a lot of close calls in shallow waters, or maneuvering near the swim line. We did make it back without the help of the motor.

O'Day Day Sailer practice day on Diamond Lake

Roman and I took the Day Sailer out. We practiced several things.

Upwind jib-only sailing is hard. After trying several times, we got so close to the lee shore that we had to use my electric motor to prevent being pushed onto people's peers. I would love to have at least a minimal shoal keel in addition to the retractable centerboard to prevent it from sailing sideways.

Motoring upwind was also difficult, as the wind was brisk, about 15 knots, and I had only 55 pounds of electric thrust motor.

Heaving to the wind worked very well; here are the steps:

1) starboard tack,
2) tightened the jib with the starboard sheet until it backfilled,
3) locked rudder to the lee
4) loosen the main a little.

While heaving to the wind, you can relax or work on the boat, as your hands are free. We have heaved to the wind many times while sailing with family to sunbathe or have a picnic.

The boat sails by itself on the "beam reach" at a slow one or two knows to the lee, depending on how much the main is helping. I tie the main just enough not to luff.

I installed a quick
jib douse (downhaul) line tied up the top of the jib. This thin line goes through some hanks to the tack and from there to the cockpit. Once I release the jib halyard and pull on this line, the jib gets pulled to the deck without the need to go to the bow. It is a great safety feature for a sudden squall.

I tested the ballast of two 50+ pound bags of sand paced midship. They added some stability to the boat in addition to the 65-pound battery I am carrying center aft. I will need all the stability I can get when sailing with my wife and daughter, Lili.

We sailed whole day, making a point of docking with the wind on our nose, it took us quite a while to beat upwind, with many close calls in shallow waters, or maneuvering near the swim line. We did make it back without the help of the motor.

storm jib on the Day Sailer?

Question about the smaller jib sizes. Currently, I have 1 jiffy reef in the main.

I found a 28 square foot storm jib ($205), and I wondered if that would be a good area for the windier situations to match the reefed main?

I want to keep the boat balanced and steady in Apostle Islands, Lake Superior. I know most of the people sail in the fair weather only (10-15 knots), I do too, but when you are several miles out, sometimes you just have no choice, hoping you are best prepared.
On the bigger boat I found that reefing genoa/main make the difference between hanging for dear life and having a lunch in the cockpit table, same wind conditions, a big difference!

cuddy-top-stepped mast with tabernacle

The idea of using the cabin top set up is to clear the space inside the cuddy and to easy the folding of the mast, as well as not having big holes in the roof.

I just ordered the tabernacle parts from Ruddy Nickerson:
http://www.drmarine.com/proddetail.asp?prod=DR2151
http://www.drmarine.com/proddetail.asp?prod=DS207

I can do the wood/glass work myself, etc. to strengthen the cuddy roof.

Before I attempt any mast modifications, I would:

1) add few profiled ribs made of thick plywood that would be glassed to the roof (upside down), to make the roof rigid.
2) add forward posts that would support the roof to the keel in the V
3) add plywood support bulkhead to the opening of the cuddy

The above I have to do anyway. Currently I have a big wooden partition board dividing the cuddy in half.

If (and I mean "if") I decide to add the tabernacle I would:

4) glass over the existing holes and ad the glass thickness in the middle and in the corners of the roof (I have a lot of holes and cut-outs)
5) add bigger plywood plates above and below the deck, bolted thru with tabernacle above the deck (easy folding)
6) add the center mast support when under the sail

The biggest weight would be the bulkhead, but I wanted to do it anyway, and it will be just few pounds.
I will post the conversion process and photos in due time.

Is it mindful or wasteful 15 minutes?

For about a decade now, I've been reminding myself of this simple philosophy of living a few minutes at a time. I think it is worth to re-state it again.

According to the Buddhists, and common sense, there is no universal good, nor bad choices in life. However, we are not entirely off the hook yet; every action carries its consequences -- yes the buddhist 'karma'.

To be 'mindful' as Buddhists say is to be aware of self and the present surroundings. It's hard to keep the constant vigilance, therefore, it is by far easier to make the minor course corrections every once a while.

Wasting time, resources, life, opportunity (to learn), or simply not caring, is hardly mindful.

I try to do the best I can a that moment and monitor my life every 15 minutes. I ask myself what have I done that is beneficial?

No worries mate, sometimes your choices will be plain dumb, but I assure you, your life will gradually turn better and you become a more valuable person because you are more mindful and you learn constantly.

Finally, the note about the rest and fun - don't overdo it, but both are necessary to maintain the sanity. Life is too short to keep it all 'hard charging'. You will learn that after 5, 10, and 20 years later, you still chasing your goals as you did the day one. Life will be over sooner than you can realize.
Enjoying the present is the only way to be happy.

Pink cast

Today, I took Lili to the doctor to take a look at the X-ray pictures the ER did. The doctor has shown me the little protrusion of the arm bone inside the elbow area. He took additional pictures and put on a pink colored cast. The casts are not made anymore of plaster-of-paris but with the fiber-cloth not unlike the stuff my boat is made of.
The cast will stay for about 3 weeks, he did not voice any concern.
Lili was very good and in a great mood today.

Sunday sailing class

In the morning I had the third of my sailing classes.

There was one more left on August 4, 2007.

The winds were very calm, but because it was a weather system coming from the North, the waves were bigger. The waves on Lake Michigan in the Chicago area are the biggest when the wind blows them all the way the length of the lake.

We practiced some tacks and gybes and the man overboard figure 8 drills.

Then, we spent much time in the port practicing the peer approaches, which was scary because it always looked like you were going to hit it.

We practiced the 90-degree approach with the swing and slid your butt (stern) to the dock. It is not unlike the car parking in a thriller movie.
Sliding the big boat to the dock slip is not easy either.

I came home so exhausted that I dropped and slept a few hours. My legs were hurting from last night's sail and today's waves.

Ji & Lili went to the birthday party on Saturday. Suposedly, Lili was jumping on the gym matresses with Jay when she fell ogg the mattresses. She fractured her left arm above the elbow. Tomorrow, I will take her to the specialist to see if she need a hard cast, right now she has the type you secure with the compression bandage. She is not hurting much anymore. But she was in pain before, she was handling herself very well.

Chicago-Mackinac Race 2007

This Saturday, at noon, the famous Chi-Mac race begins.
For those who don't know it is rather difficult 333 mile race. Lake Michigan can be unforgiving with short, tall choppy waves and strong winds. There are calms, too, as I experienced in 2001. The race takes about 3-4 days of non-stop sailing. You could do it in 18 hours on very fast catamaran (Stars and Stripes 60ft. 1998), or in 24 hours on very fast boat(Geronimo 33ft. 1997, Pyewacket 77ft. 2002), but most of us don't have the money these boats cost, and this is what makes it wonderful, in comparison to let's say America's cup -- anybody can participate, even if you are as slow as a river barge. There are safety rules of course.

I am planning to be on the water to see the start (I have my sailing class at the same time in Chicago).
Later, in the afternoon, if we will be able to sail out off Waukegan harbor at 4 PM we could see some of the yachts again under the full sail.
I am planning to bring the good telescopic lenses, bring some video cameras, too.
Let's hope for the good weather, the winds from SW, so the boats will have big, colorful spinnakers out.
Saturday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a high near 79. Breezy, with a west southwest wind between 10 and 20 mph.
Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, then gradually becoming clear, with a low around 59. West wind between 5 and 10 mph becoming calm.
Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 82. Calm wind becoming north northwest around 5 mph.
Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 64.

My favorite quotations..

“A man should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.
